Inside TreeHouse

Beyond statistics and results, it’s the countless stories of transformation, struggle, hope, and learning we hear from those inside TreeHouse that show us why this work matters so much. We want to share a glimpse of what we see happening throughout the year through the eyes of the teens, staff, and volunteers who experience it firsthand. Please keep our teens in your thoughts and prayers.

Truth Exposed

Thursday, March 15, 2018

Eagan TreeHouse associate, Sarah DeJonge, was the speaker for this year’s Winter Blast weekend retreat. The theme she chose was “Truth Exposed.” Sarah felt passionate about helping students understand that God is FOR them and wants the best for them. Sarah focused on John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” For many teens, it was their first exposure to understanding that God wants them to have a full and positive life, despite the tough circumstances, trials and injustices they have experienced. After each talk, there was an opportunity to process through any anger they had for the “hand they have been dealt” in life.

A powerful exercise involved students writing the things they were angry at on a garbage can and then being given the opportunity to smash the garbage can, symbolizing the evil in this world. For many, it was the first time they were able to release some difficult things that happened to them and for some, it gave them a space to voice some injustices they have never spoken out loud before. Additionally, students explored Jesus’ ever-present role in our lives and were reminded of God’s love for them.

Winter Blast impacted me by giving me a closer relationship with God. It made me realize that God always walks with us through the highs and the lows. I also felt more connected with the other staff and students on the trip after being able to spend a lot of time with them and go through deep moments with them.

Retreats like Winter Blast are just a couple days in the life of a teen but time after time, we witness how God powerfully moves when we give Him the space and opportunity to meet us right where we are. In the highs and in the lows, God is present...and that’s the truth.
